Grower profile: Kwekerij ‘t Westland

John van Marrewijk, his son Thimo, and Arco Vreugdenhil together own Kwekerij ’t Westland, which specialises in growing red, orange, and yellow sweet pointed peppers on a total area of six hectares. ‘We’re proud to say that, after years of preparatory research and searching for the perfect variety, we’ve found a flavourful product that we supply with three colour varieties per package,’ John explains.

The owners have a wealth of experience in growing both sweet pointed peppers and traditional bell peppers. John notes, ‘While the cultivation processes display similarities, sweet pointed pepper consumption is showing a far higher growth rate in terms of percentages, creating a significant demand for flavour.’ The owners recognised a product for the future in the sweet pointed pepper. They share a passion for the product while greatly valuing a constant drive for innovation, as well as pooling their strengths and knowledge. All these factors contribute to the creation of a high-quality product. ‘We grow for flavour, are always pursuing new flavours, and are continually aiming to better fulfil the customers’ needs. In the sweet pointed pepper, we’ve created a product that distinguishes itself from the “normal” bell pepper because of the better flavour,’ John explains.

Kwekerij ‘t Westland sorts the sweet pointed peppers on-site. The products are packaged according to customers’ wishes at the Rainbow Kleinpak packing centre. ‘Partly due to the wide range of possibilities the machines offer and the flexibility of the employees, we can supply almost any kind of packaging. We’re not strictly limited to modifying existing packaging; we can also work with our customers to develop entirely new packaging concepts.’
