Our grower Tom Bos from Vierpolders has been cultivating organically since 2012. He started with about 17,000 m². Now he farms 8.2 hectares of peppers and tomatoes completely organically. What makes Tom’s company so special is that it also uses geothermal energy for growing. It is unique because this combination is not used by any other grower.
Tom says, “By harnessing geothermal heat, 70% of the business’s energy requirements can be covered. The business also uses liquid CO2, so it is virtually unreliant on fossil fuels. I made a concious choice to cultivate organically. It is a different type of cultivation method and there are more uncertainties to deal with compared to controlled cultivation in a greenhouse. But I wouldn’t have it any other way and I’ll keep on investing in sustainable cultivation. Another great thing about organic cultivation is the effort put into making the ground healthy, which delivers a long-lasting improvement. So, we can benefit for many years to come, without the ground becoming exhausted.”
