End of the Fairtrade season

End of the Fairtrade season

Desert Joy has been growing the juiciest Fairtrade tomatoes in sunny Tunisia since December 2012. An abundance of natural light, fabulous weather conditions, and short logistics routes make Tunisia the ideal place to grow top-quality tomatoes outside of the Dutch season. Desert Joy pays respect to people and the environment, and is the first Fairtrade-certified tomato grower in the world.

Since the Fairtrade project began, workers have received a development premium for the tomatoes sold on the European Fairtrade market. This premium is managed by a specially set up committee, represented by the workers, and is used to improve their working and living conditions. The extra payment has provided transport to and from work, childcare, and medical and dental care for all the workers. This season, there have been investments in two new buses, so workers from more remote areas can travel to and from work safely. Finally, a kitchen has also been installed, so workers can enjoy a healthy and nutritious lunch every day. Eating together is an important social activity in Tunisia. The new kitchen not only means that workers eat well and get enough energy, but it also helps to strengthen the bonds between them.
